The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a consortium of 26 cities and water districts that provides drinking water to nearly 19 million people in Southern California. Metropolitan’s mission is to provide its service area with adequate and reliable supplies of high quality water to meet current and future needs in an environmentally and economically responsible way. Metropolitan’s facilities include the 242-mile Colorado River Aqueduct, five water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 2.3 billion gallons per day, nine surface water reservoirs, 830 miles of pipeline, and 15 hydroelectric power plants.
The Engineer in this position will have the opportunity to make an impact and support the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) in carrying out its mission. The mission is to provide its service area with adequate and reliable supplies of high-quality water to meet present and future needs in an environmentally and economically responsible way.
This position is under the MWD’s Engineering Services Group, Capital Investment Plan (CIP) Team, and is located at Union Station Headquarters in Los Angeles, California. The Engineer in this position will assist with the development and publication of MWD’s biennial CIP, which requires a high level of interdepartmental coordination, interaction with all levels of management, technical engineering, writing, financial analytical, and strong communication skills.
As an Engineer, you will report directly to the CIP Team Manager and will have a lead and supporting role in planning, budgeting, administering, developing, monitoring, forecasting, and reporting of the CIP. You will also have the responsibility to assist in developing, improving, and documenting these processes.
A major responsibility of this position will be to support and assist in the preparation of the biennial CIP budget and the preparation of the CIP quarterly reports. This includes assisting with the receipt and organization of the CIP project proposals, working with the evaluation committee in reviewing and scoring the proposals, prioritizing the projects, and developing the CIP budget and long-term funding needs to support the MWD’s mission while considering project schedules, personnel requirements, and infrastructure reliability needs. It also includes collecting information on CIP activities and achievements from various teams and groups, generating various cost reports on CIP, assisting preparation of the CIP expenditures forecast, and preparing the quarterly reports. In addition, this position will work with Finance in preparation of the CIP budget documents and board letters. The Engineer in this position will make formal presentations to the Board of Directors and will give oral presentations regarding all aspects of the CIP to staff, management, and external agencies.
