As a Microbiology Team Manager, you will be responsible for managing and supervising the Source Water Microbiology Team.

The team is responsible for applied microbiological research and monitoring, including: detecting bacterial, viral, and protozoal contaminants in water, including wastewater and recycled water; development, evaluation, and recommendation of new strategies and technologies to improve water quality, protect source water against contamination, and to respond to emerging public health issues; detecting cyanotoxins in source waters and throughout the treatment process; recommending and evaluating new methods and technologies for detecting all biological contaminants; and routine monitoring of invasive quagga mussel populations.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and eight years of increasingly responsible relevant experience, of which two years must have been in a project management, supervisory, or lead capacity; OR an advanced degree from an accredited college or university and six years of increasingly responsible relevant experience, of which two years must have been in a project management, supervisory, or lead capacity.

Increasingly responsible relevant experience is defined as: research on waterborne pathogens and a combination of any of the following which contributes to an advanced knowledge of microbiological water quality issues, monitoring, and regulations: development of microbial detection methods; assessment of drinking water, wastewater, and recycled water treatment processes for the removal and inactivation of pathogens; microbial source tracking to identify human and animal sources of water pollution; monitoring for cyanotoxins; monitoring for invasive mussels; and monitoring for unregulated microbial contaminants in source and finished drinking water.

Desirable Qualifications:

A Ph.D. from an accredited college or university with a major in microbiology, biological sciences, biochemistry, environmental sciences, water quality science, or a related field. Pertinent and related post-doctoral experience also highly desirable.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
License(s): Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent (required at time of application) that allows you to drive during your employment.
