An Assistant Engineer II at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) can expect to work on some of the largest water treatment, storage, conveyance, distribution and recycling projects in the world. We deliver an average of 1.5 billion gallons of high-quality water per day to a 5,200-square-mile service area in Southern California for 19 million people.
The Treatment Plant Design Team is responsible for the design of conventional and advanced water treatment plant facilities with an emphasis on process design. Processes may include ozonation, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, membrane bioreactors, reverse osmosis, UV disinfection, and advanced oxidation.
An Assistant Engineer II on this team can expect to perform work that typically includes process design calculations for chemical feed systems including ozone, sulfuric acid, caustic soda, polymers, alum, chlorine, ammonia, fluoride and other chemical systems; mechanical equipment sizing; preparation of conceptual study and preliminary design reports and memos; development of design criteria and standards; preparation of process flow diagrams, mechanical design drawings and specifications for water treatment facilities and water conveyance and distribution systems projects. This position also provides engineering support during construction, testing, commissioning, and startup. Construction delivery methods include in-house construction forces, design-bid-build, and progressive design-build.
In addition to capital improvement projects, the Assistant Engineer II may assist in investigations of existing facilities, structures, processes and equipment to resolve performance, operational, or reliability issues. This position may also assist in the area of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) engineering including researching and performing HSE and fire code compliance review of specifications and drawings. Both office and fieldwork will be required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and two years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Assistant Engineer I level.
Relevant Experience is defined as:
Assisted in writing reports and developing construction drawings and specifications for water/wastewater/reuse treatment plants or petrochemical/chemical production plants. Assisted in developing calculations and specifications for the selection of mechanical equipment and systems.
A degree (Bachelor's or Master's) in related field is defined as a Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering degree.
QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
License(s): Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent (required at time of application) that allows you to drive during your employment.
